3-dimensional illusionism
Painting and sculpture
The play between sensation, perception and representation fascinates me.
Within my work, I try to set up relationships that confound our conventional understandings of
‘realistic representation’ and replace them with ideas about visual language and
subjective experience, a kind of visual trickery in witch painted forms seem to be real. I
make work which can be seen as both sculptural and pictorial, where the 3-dimensional
illusionism of the image conflicts with the actual dimensionality of the object upon which it
is drawn. Or i may make work which is simultaneously figurative and conceptually abstract. In
all cases the goal is to build a relationship between the subject matter, the representation
of the subject and the materiality of the object which reveals something about what goes on
beneath
the surface
of my own consciousness.
